Down Payment and Policy Financing: What You Need To Know
Table of Contents
Imagine you are about to protect your business with commercial insurance. The Down Payment is the initial payment you must make to determine how much of your commercial insurance policy can be financed.
This first payment activates your policy and your coverage. Without this payment, your coverage does not begin. It is a mandatory payment that represents a percentage of the total cost of the policy.
When Do You Have to Make This Payment?
You will need to make a Down Payment in the following situations:
- When purchasing a policy: If you are taking out a commercial insurance policy for the first time.
- Upon renewal: To continue your protection when renewing your policy.
- When making changes: If you add new trucks or drivers to your policy (a process called a “positive endorsement”).
Accepted Payment Methods for Your Down Payment
There are several ways to make your Down Payment, each with its own processing time and activation period:
| Payment Method | How Long Does It Take to Process? | When Does My Coverage Start? | Any Extra Costs? |
| Credit/Debit Card | 3 business days | Immediately | 3.5% of the total amount |
| ACH (electronic transfer) | 6 business days | 1 business day after payment confirmation | $10 per transaction |
| Cash (deposit) | 1 business day | Instantly (if deposited before 5:00 PM EST) | $0 |
| Wire Transfer | 2 business days | Immediately! | Approximately $30 per transaction |
💡 Tip: For wire transfers or deposits, always request Preventty’s official bank details from your advisor.
How to Make Your Payment Securely
At Preventty, we take payment security seriously. That’s why we only use these trusted platforms:
- Input One
- e-Pay
⚠️ Important: We do not accept PayPal or other alternative platforms. Only make payments through our official channels to avoid fraud.
Sometimes, depending on your specific policy, you may need to pay directly to the Managing General Agent (MGA) instead of Preventty. Your advisor will inform you if this applies to your case—don’t hesitate to ask questions!
What If You Don’t Have the Full Amount for the Down Payment?
No problem! We offer financing and deferral options:
Down Payment Financing Example
Let’s say your Down Payment is $4,000, but you only have $3,000 available:
- You pay the $3,000 to Preventty.
- The remaining $1,000 is financed through All America Financial.
- You make payments directly to All America Financial, not Preventty.
📌 Note: If your receipt shows a loan with All America Financial, be sure to make that payment directly to them. Preventty acts only as an intermediary to facilitate financing.
Other Ways to Pay for Your Insurance
- Full Payment: Pay your entire policy upfront to avoid monthly payments. Many clients choose this option for simpler financial planning.
- Payments for Policy Changes: If you add a vehicle or make changes to your policy, you typically need to pay the additional cost in full. However, if the endorsement exceeds $670, you can opt for an initial payment through All America Financial.
Communication and Notifications
All America Financial keeps customers informed through: ✅ Credit approval notifications ✅ Payment reminders ✅ Policy cancellation warnings
These updates help customers stay on top of their payments and avoid coverage interruptions.
Key Functions of Insurance Financing Companies
1️⃣ Loans to Cover Full Policy Cost:
- Enables you to pay the full premium and maintain coverage without a large upfront payment.
2️⃣ Interest Rates & Payment Terms:
- APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is set by the financing company.
- Payment plans typically extend up to 10 months, allowing two months of coverage without payments.
3️⃣ Payment Processing & Management:
- You must make all payments directly to the financing company.
What Happens If You Cancel a Financed Policy?
If you cancel a financed policy, the refund process may take up to 90 days. During this period, it is crucial to continue making monthly payments.
💡 Why? The finance company will first use the refund to cover any remaining balance. If your payments are current, you will receive any excess refund without issue.
